Who this guide is for

Arranging a scan for family in Nepal

Working in the Gulf, Malaysia, Korea or Japan, or living in the UK, US or Australia, and need a scan for a parent at home. How to arrange it from abroad.

Visiting Nepal and need a scan

Coming home for a visit and want a scan your doctor has asked for, at a fraction of UK or US self pay prices. Plan your scan trip.

Living in Nepal

Comparing hospitals before you book, and choosing between a government hospital and a private centre. Government vs private.

Having a scan in Kathmandu from abroad

  1. Talk to your own doctor. Get a referral letter that names the scan and the body part, and collect any previous scans and reports.
  2. Choose a centre. Check which machine it has (1.5T or 3T MRI, CT slices), its price, and when the report will be ready. Compare centres.
  3. Book before you fly. Call the centre to confirm the price, preparation and appointment. Some tests need fasting or a kidney blood test first.
  4. Have the scan. Bring your passport, referral and cash in Nepali rupees as a backup to cards.
  5. Take everything home. Ask for the images on CD or USB (DICOM format) and a written report, and give both to your doctor at home. What to ask for.

Good to know

3T MRI

Several centres list 3 tesla MRI, including KMC, Annapurna Neuro, Kundalini and Jeebanta. When it matters.

PET-CT

Two centres in Kathmandu, Kundalini and Sooriya, offer FDG PET-CT. We found no source showing PSMA PET is available in Nepal. PET-CT details.

Government vs private

Government and teaching hospitals publish the lowest prices, but expect queues, and some government CT machines were out of service in 2026.

Common questions

How much is an MRI in Kathmandu?
Across the rate lists we checked, a brain MRI averages NPR 9,500 (about US$63), from NPR 8,000 at government hospitals to NPR 12,150 at private hospitals. Knee and shoulder MRI are a little more. See MRI prices.
Is it worth travelling to Nepal just for a scan?
Usually only if you are already travelling, visiting family, or facing a long wait at home. The scan itself is much cheaper than UK self pay, but flights cost far more than the saving on a single scan. Read the UK comparison.
Do I need a referral?
Centres generally ask for a doctor's request. Bring a referral letter from your own doctor, or see a doctor at the hospital's outpatient department first. Read more.
Will my GP in the UK use a scan done in Nepal?
There is no guarantee. Bring the full images and an English report; your GP or NHS consultant decides whether to rely on them or repeat the scan. Read more.
Can I book through this site?
Not yet. We are agreeing terms with a small number of partner centres so that booking through us gives you 10% off there. Other hospitals charge their normal price, so contact them directly.
