1.5T vs 3T MRI
The number is the strength of the magnet in tesla. A stronger magnet can give sharper images, but it is not automatically the better choice.
What the difference means
A 3 tesla (3T) magnet is twice as strong as a 1.5 tesla (1.5T) magnet. The stronger field gives more signal, which can be used for finer detail or faster scans.
When 3T can help
- Detailed brain imaging, for example epilepsy, small lesions or advanced techniques
- Prostate MRI
- Small joints and nerves
- MR angiography of small vessels
When 1.5T is fine or better
- Most routine spine, knee and shoulder scans
- Patients with some metal implants, where 1.5T can cause fewer artefacts and is approved for more devices
- When it is the faster, cheaper or nearer option
Kathmandu centres that say they have 3T MRI
- Kathmandu Medical College Teaching Hospital (KMC): 3T
- Norvic International Hospital: 3T (2018 news report)
- Annapurna Neuro Hospital: 3T
- TU Teaching Hospital (TUTH): 3T (in testing 04/2025), plus 1.5T and 0.3T
- Kundalini Diagnostic Center: 3T
- Jeebanta Advanced Kathmandu Imaging: 3T
- Lalitpur Three Tesla MRI and Diagnostic Center: 3T (from the centre's name; not confirmed)

Common questions
Is 3T always better than 1.5T?
No. 3T gives a stronger signal, which helps for some brain, nerve, prostate and small joint scans. For many routine scans a modern 1.5T machine gives fully diagnostic images, and it can be better for patients with some metal implants.
Does a 3T MRI cost more in Kathmandu?
Often, but not always. Compare the published prices for your test on the price list and ask the centre which machine your scan will be done on.
